Cairns is in tropical Far North Queensland and is considered the gateway to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. There is much to see and do or you can kick back and relax and just soak up the tropical beach experience. Cairns is one of Australia’s most popular travel destinations because of its tropical climate and its close proximity to fantastic array of many attractions including the World Heritage listed National Parks of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree National Park including Cape Tribulation.

Cairns

cairnsCairns City is framed by a backdrop of rainforest mountain ranges, with the Cairns Esplanade being the central spot for tourists and locals alike. The Esplanade is a scenic promenade that stretches for 2.5 km and includes a swimming lagoon, waterfront boardwalks, BBQ areas and a children’s water park. The southern end is the central hub where you will find the swimming lagoon, Reef Fleet Terminal, marina, Pier complex and over 100 restaurants to choose from. One of our favourites is The Salthouse situated at Marina Point next to the Yacht club. It offers a panorama of the ocean, marina and city on the waterfront. They often have two for one deals for lunch midweek on their tapas bar menu. The Reef Casino is small but also has the Cairnszoom and wildlife dome on the top

The Great Barrier Reef

sailing the great barrier reefThe Great Barrier Reef is the ultimate destination for visitors to Far North Queensland. Cairns is the closest gateway to the Great Barrier Reef with trips taking as little as 45 minutes to reach coral reefs and sandy islands. All the cruise. dive and snorkel boats leave from Cairns Wharf less than 15 minutes drive. There are a variety of reef experiences on offer, whether it’s your first time snorkeling, active diver, non-swimmer, there are many ways to get the most out of your Great Barrier Reef experience. One that we have enjoyed is the Ocean Spirit, a large sailing Catamaran that motors out to Michalemas Cay (a sandy isle on the outer reef) and sails back into Cairns (weather permitting). However, there are lots of packages available and I am sure you will find something that suits you

The Daintree

The DaintreeThe world heritage Daintree rainforest (where the rain forest meets the reef) is spectacular and well worth a visit. You will need at least a full day to discover the area. The road ends at the Daintree River and you will need to use the car ferry to cross and travel North into the rainforest.

Winding for 140 kilometres, the Daintree River is one of the longest rivers on Australia’s east coast providing diverse habitats for many species. Cruise along it to spot prehistoric crocodiles and colourful birds or join a fishing charter to haul in a mighty barramundi.

Once you get to the other side, the road is sealed until just past Cape Tribulation. Along the way visit the Alexander Range Lookout and the Daintree Discovery Centre.

Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is a 45 minute Fast Cat ride (about 30 kms) from Cairns in Queensland, and is surrounded by a reef system that forms part of the Great Barrier Reef and the island offers a unique combination of rain forest and coral reef. A great alternative to the reef pontoon experience, here you can snorkel right off the sand. Idyllic white sandy beaches lead into the safe, sheltered waters, which are also ideal for swimming and water sports as well as yachting and boating.

Have some fun on the water as well as in it, with activities including diving, snorkelling, kayaking, Paddle boarding and not to forget the trampoline in the sea. Explore the coral fringe reef in the comfort of our Glass Bottom Boat.

Fitzroy Island is an ideal destination for a day trip from Cairns. Spend the full day and have lunch at Foxy’s Bar:

A large Pacific Islands bar with a 70s structural theme, situated right on the beach front, on the way to Nudey Beach). Foxy’s has an excellent casual cafe style food menu and provides a wide range of food and drink options including kids meals and coffee.

Guest Reviews

Home is absolutely beautiful, pool is great, awesome access to beach and day trips. Can walk to great restaurant. Owners are very timely in e-mail response. Also have caretaker (Jenny) who meets you at the property on arrival and checks in during your stay to make sure all is running smoothly. Free WI-FI a definite plus. Amenities are great. Quick refund of damage deposit. We use VRBO alot, and hands-down, this was the BEST place we'd ever stayed.
